We are pleased to announce the Implementation of WHOIS Privacy Redaction! This is a significant development aimed at enhancing privacy, security, and trust within the Nigerian digital space.
This new service is set to commence on Monday, 16th of June 2025.
The WHOIS Privacy Redaction service will shield the personal information of Registrants, such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, from public visibility in the WHOIS database. Instead, these details will be replaced with “Data Redacted.” This measure is specifically designed to protect registrants from unsolicited contact, reduce the risk of identity theft, and mitigate spam, thereby aligning the .ng domain space with global best practices in data protection.
While personal data will be redacted, it is important to note that essential technical information, including nameservers, domain lock status, and registration/expiration dates, will remain publicly accessible. This ensures the continued smooth functioning of the internet.
Furthermore, NiRA has established a clear mechanism for legitimate third-party inquiries, including those from law enforcement agencies. Such communications will be facilitated through a designated contact form. Messages received via this form will be forwarded by the Registrar to the registrant’s email address on file, ensuring that necessary communication can occur without compromising the public exposure of personal data.
This initiative is the result of careful consideration and collaboration, supported by a consensus reached at the NiRA Registrars Forum on October 30, 2024, recommended by NiRA’s Domain Name Policy Committee, and subsequently approved by the NiRA Executive Board of Directors (EBOD). It also aligns with the data protection principles emphasized by the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDPA). The technical implementation will be handled at the registry level, leveraging our existing infrastructure which already supports data redaction for EU citizens.
NiRA firmly believes that this proactive step will not only enhance individual privacy but also significantly bolster the overall security and credibility of the .ng domain space. We anticipate this will make the .ng domain an even more attractive and safer choice for individuals and businesses alike.

We appreciate your continued partnership and support in implementing this important service. Further details and any necessary procedural adjustments will be communicated in due course.
