Statement by Deji Adeyanju
Yesterday, we submitted a petition to the Nigerian Senate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, and the Embassy of the Republic of Benin regarding the deplorable conditions in which some Nigerian citizens are being held at the Civil de Adjagbo Prison in Abomey-Calavi, Republic of Benin.

These individuals have reportedly been detained without access to fair trial, legal representation, or even the most basic safeguards guaranteed under international human rights law. Disturbingly, one of the detainees, Mr. Salami Deyomi, is said to have died in custody under circumstances that demand urgent clarification. Many others remain incarcerated under harsh, inhumane, and degrading conditions.

We therefore call on the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to urgently investigate this matter, engage with the authorities of the Republic of Benin, and ensure that the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens are fully protected.
Human rights are universal, inalienable, and non-negotiable. They must be upheld without exception.
