My attention has been drawn to a circulating publication that presents several unfounded claims about my record, my intentions and the political history of Eti-Osa and Lagos-Island. It is important to address these matters plainly so that the public is guided by facts rather than speculation.
The author of the publication gives a distorted account of the Eti-Osa primary election. That contest was decided by a margin of two votes in favour of Mr Oyekanmi Elegushi, a respected member of the Elegushi family. Expecting His Royal Majesty, Oba Saheed Elegushi, to oppose his own brother reflects a limited understanding of our cultural values and the political realities that guide community life. Arguments built on such assumptions do not serve the public interest.
For a complete understanding of the 2023 general elections, it is necessary to recognise the broader forces that shaped it. The strong “Obidient” wave swept through Eti-Osa and altered the usual voting patterns. In addition, there was a clear sentiment among some groups against a non-indigene holding elective office in the constituency. These factors played a significant role in the final outcome. Hence, my loss at the polls was not connected to poor performance. The available records show that I remain the most effective representative Eti-Osa has produced, with achievements in development projects, constituent engagement, legislative work and visible community interventions.
Since relocating to Lagos-Island in 2023, I have worked to support practical improvements across the community. Idoluwo Street was reconstructed and rehabilitated. Several neighbourhoods now have solar powered street lighting. Traditional homes and palace structures have received support for rehabilitation. I have also assisted qualified residents in securing employment within the civil service. These efforts reflect my belief that true service is demonstrated through steady and consistent work.
In light of these facts, it is reasonable to ask a simple question. Is it a fault to return home when one is not appreciated elsewhere? Many people turn to their roots for strength, acceptance and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully. Questioning that choice reveals more about the critic than about my intentions.
I encourage anyone who wishes to review the evidence of my work to visit my website at ibo.org.ng or my Instagram page @repibrahimobanikoro, where detailed records, photographs and further clarifications are available.
The people of Lagos-Island deserve clear information and responsible leadership. They also deserve a political environment that values accuracy. Anyone addressing the public has a duty to check their claims before presenting them as fact.
I remain committed to the progress of Lagos-Island and to a political culture shaped by clarity, respect and diligent service.
