ABOUT NEST AFRICA AI INNOVATION LAB

Nest Africa Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation Lab  is a research-driven innovation hub dedicated to advancing ethical, inclusive, and Africa-centred artificial intelligence. We work at the intersection of AI research, policy, innovation, capacity building, and digital governance, supporting startups, researchers, policymakers, and communities across Africa.

As part of our commitment to women’s participation in technology, research, and leadership, we are recruiting female volunteer interns to support our operations, programs, and research activities in the coming year. However, other genders can apply as well.

Our Mission: To advance applied AI research, innovation, and capacity building, and to develop inclusive, data-driven technologies that address Africa’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges while empowering governments, businesses, and communities with ethical, scalable, and locally relevant AI solutions.

STRUCTURE OF THE INTERNSHIP

  • Type: Volunteer Internship
  • Duration: 3–4 months (with possible extension based on performance and organisational needs)
  • Mode: Fully Remote (Africa-based)
  • Start Period: January (following selection)

ROLES DESCRIPTION

  1. Admin & Human Resources (HR) Intern

The Admin & HR Intern supports the internal coordination, documentation, and people-management systems of the Lab. This role provides the organisational backbone that enables Nest Africa’s research, innovation, training, and policy engagements to run effectively. The intern will work closely with all units; research, programmes, communications, and finance, gaining a holistic understanding of how an AI research and innovation lab operates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support internal documentation, record-keeping, and filing systems.
  • Assist recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding of interns, volunteers, and collaborators.
  • Coordinate meeting schedules, internal communications, and follow-ups.
  • Maintain team databases, attendance logs, and institutional records.
  • Support drafting of internal policies, guidelines, and operational reports.

Ideal Background: Public Administration, Human Resources, Law, Management, Social Sciences, or related fields.

  1. Research Intern I – AI Policy, Governance & Digital Policy

The Research Intern I supports policy-oriented and analytical research that advances ethical, inclusive, and Africa-centred AI development. This role is suited for candidates interested in law, public policy, governance, ethics, and innovation ecosystems, and how AI research informs regulation, institutional strengthening, and advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct desk-based research on AI governance frameworks, digital policy, ethics, and innovation ecosystems in Africa
  • Review and synthesise academic literature, policy documents, and regulatory instruments
  • Support data collection, qualitative analysis, and comparative policy reviews
  • Assist in drafting research briefs, policy notes, reports, and background papers
  • Support documentation of insights from policy dialogues, webinars, workshops, and stakeholder engagements
  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing sessions and research planning meetings

Ideal Background: Law, International Relations, Public Policy, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Technology Policy, AI Ethics, or related fields.

  1. Research Intern II – Applied AI & Technical Research

The Research Intern II supports hands-on, applied AI research across multidisciplinary teams, contributing to experimentation, data-driven analysis, and practical AI use cases relevant to African contexts. This role is more technical and suited for candidates with coding, data analysis, or machine learning experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support applied AI research projects, including data preparation, analysis, and experimentation
  • Assist in developing, testing, or documenting AI models, tools, or prototypes
  • Conduct technical literature reviews on AI methods, datasets, and emerging technologies
  • Collaborate with policy, research, and programme teams to translate technical findings into usable insights
  • Support documentation of applied research processes, results, and limitations
  • Use and contribute to research platforms and tools (e.g., GitHub, Google Colab, Hugging Face, Kaggle)
  • Participate in multidisciplinary research meetings and technical reviews

Technical Skills (Preferred)

  • Programming experience (e.g., Python, R, SQL, JavaScript)
  • Familiarity with data analysis and machine learning libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • Experience with version control systems (Git/GitHub)
  • Ability to work with datasets, APIs, or research platforms
  • Strong documentation and reproducibility practices

Ideal Background: Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, Engineering, Information Systems, Computational Social Science, or related technical disciplines.

  1. Communications Intern

The Communications Intern supports visibility, storytelling, and public engagement, translating complex research and policy work into clear and engaging narratives. This role strengthens Nest Africa’s institutional voice and digital presence while providing hands-on experience in strategic communications within the AI and technology policy space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop content for social media, newsletters, and website updates
  • Support communication around research outputs, programmes, and events
  • Draft announcements, blog posts, and press materials
  • Manage social media calendars and track engagement metrics
  • Support documentation and reporting of events and activities

Ideal Background: Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, or related fields.

  1. Programmes & Capacity Building Intern

The Programmes & Capacity Building Intern supports the design, coordination, and delivery of programmes, training, and capacity-building initiatives that translate Nest Africa’s research and innovation work into practical learning experiences for communities, professionals, and policymakers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support planning, coordination, and implementation of training programmes, workshops, fellowships, and events
  • Assist in curriculum development, training materials preparation, and session documentation
  • Coordinate logistics, schedules, and communication with participants, facilitators, and partners
  • Support monitoring, evaluation, and documentation of programme outcomes and learnings
  • Assist in stakeholder engagement and partnership coordination for capacity-building initiatives
  • Contribute to reports, learning briefs, and post-programme reviews

Ideal Background: Education, Development Studies, Public Policy, Social Sciences, Project Management, Technology Studies, or related fields.

  1. Finance & Grant Writing Intern

The Finance & Grant Writing Intern supports the Lab’s financial sustainability and fundraising efforts, linking budgeting and financial documentation to programme and research design.

The Finance & Grant Writing Intern also participates in internal planning meetings, gaining insight into how strategic priorities are translated into fundable proposals and how financial considerations shape project implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with basic financial documentation and expense tracking
  • Support preparation of project budgets and financial summaries
  • Research funding opportunities, grants, and fellowships
  • Assist in drafting grant concept notes and proposals
  • Support donor documentation and reporting processes

Ideal Background: Finance, Economics, Accounting, Development Studies, Public Administration, or related fields.

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS & LEARNING OUTCOMES (ALL ROLES)

  • Practical experience within a pan-African AI research and innovation organisation
  • Exposure to AI governance, digital policy, and innovation ecosystems in Africa
  • Development of research, writing, coordination, and professional communication skills

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Minimum 10 hours per week (approximately 2–3 days weekly)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA (ALL ROLES)

Applicants must:

  • Open to all gender, however Female applicants will be prioritized.
  • Be a student or recent graduate (law, social sciences, technology, communications, finance, international relations, or related fields)
  • Have strong interest in AI, technology, research, innovation, or digital policy in Africa
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills
  • Be committed, self-motivated, and able to work independently in a remote environment
  • Be available for the full duration of the internship.
