One in twelve maternal deaths worldwide is a woman in Nigeria who didn’t want to be pregnant. Many of these deaths are preventable: contraceptives allow women to avoid pregnancies they do not want. Nigeria’s public health system has the clinics and trained staff to provide them, but the vast majority of public health facilities regularly run out of contraceptives.
Access to Medicines Initiative (AMI) closes that gap. We deliver contraceptives directly to public health facilities, help state governments fund and sustain their own procurement, and help improve the supply systems that route supply to where it’s short.
Our pilot across 137 facilities in two states in Northern Nigeria raised contraceptive use by an average of 75% compared to a control group. We now cover all of Katsina State, with a projected 7,100 unintended pregnancies averted and 43 lives saved this year.
We expect to scale our impact substantially over the next few years. Doing that well requires us to know what impact our interventions actually have, with this evidence informing which programs to iterate on, expand or discontinue. That is where this role comes in.
Job Title: Head of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Data
Location: Remote, preferred overlap of 2-4 hours with UK time
Type: Full-time
Compensation: $3,000-7,000 per month, depending on need and location
Start date: Late October 2026 preferred, ideally no later than December 1, 2026

The role
You will lead AMI’s Monitoring and Evaluation work. You help decide what evidence the organisation needs, design or adjust the systems that generate it, and make sure learnings are incorporated into future decisions. This is a senior role with significant influence over how AMI understands and reports its own impact.
In the first six to twelve months, a large portion of the role will be co-designing a large-scale evaluation of AMI’s core direct delivery work, and then overseeing that project to completion. This project will involve integrating a new monitoring system that you develop into AMI’s upcoming geographic expansion. This is the most important component of the role, though you will have other, related responsibilities as well.
You will be responsible for AMI’s internal data systems and pipelines. Some of this you will inherit, but some of it you may need to build yourself. In either case, you will be in charge of deciding what needs to be built, maintained, or improved under resource constraints. You will decide how much of the data systems to run personally versus delegate, including the management of our M&E officers on the ground.
You will report directly to the Executive Director and serve as her primary quantitative advisor. Whenever a strategic or program design decision has a quantitative dimension, your job is to analyze the data, determine what it shows, as well as its limitations, and communicate that clearly. You may also need to share your findings externally, either in fundraising calls or public materials.

- Identifying which programmatic decisions move AMI’s impact most
Evaluation design
- Designing a monitoring or evaluation project, from a well-defined question down to a concrete data collection and analysis plan
- Choosing the right evaluation methodology given real constraints on time, data quality, and resources
Data systems engineering
- Building, debugging, and upgrading AMI’s internal data pipelines
- Directing AI coding tools to build analysis scripts and simple internal GUIs
Analytic communication
- Translating field data into a simple headline result
- Explaining the fuller picture behind headline results and providing context on the underlying data
Management of data operations
- Deciding what data roles AMI needs as we scale, and when to hire, contract, or automate
- Writing the requirements for those roles and assessing candidates against that bar
- Creating detailed instructions for staff members with less context than you
Who you are
- You have strong judgement under uncertainty. You’ve worked with messy, imperfect data enough to know what it can be used for, as well as its limitations.
- You move fluidly between levels of quantitative and strategic depth. You can internalize the complexities of a new data system quickly, analyze it yourself, then distill the results to guide a high level strategic decision. You can translate this knowledge into simple instructions about what aspects of data collection M&E officers should pay special attention to.
- You can use AI coding tools efficiently without overreliance. You can use AI tools to build analysis scripts and GUIs to speed up your workflow, but you understand code and analysis well enough to catch errors, so your results are reliable.
- You have high agency. When faced with a problem, you don’t need anyone else to spell out the solution. You figure out what needs to be done and delegate it or do it yourself.
- You are motivated by impact. The work will be challenging and at times abstract. However, if you do it right, you can massively increase the effectiveness of AMI as a whole. You care about making the organisation more effective because you care about the real-world outcome.

What to expect
AMI is a small, fast-growing organisation, so this role will involve a high degree of ownership, variety, and ambiguity. You will often be helping to build or modify data systems, rather than stepping into fully established processes. You will have support from the rest of the team, but we are looking for someone who enjoys taking initiative, creating structure, and turning messy data into clear answers.
Your job is to make sure every decision with a quantitative dimension receives sufficient rigour and a clear, well-argued recommendation.
This role is best suited to someone who is energised by technical depth, reducing uncertainty, and the chance to help a growing organisation measure and maximise its own impact.
